Nutrisystem® D®—for people with diabetes

Nutrisystem D is a weight loss program for people with diabetes that meets the nutritional guidelines of the American Diabetes Association** and, together with counseling sessions, is clinically proven to help people with type 2 diabetes lose weight and manage their blood glucose.

With Nutrisystem D, your patients will receive:

  • 28 days of delicious, diabetes-friendly meals delivered to their door
  • Low-glycemic index plan with over 150 portioned-controlled menu items
  • Unlimited access to online community, tracking tools and planners
  • Support from Certified Diabetes Educators, dietitians and counselors
  • My Daily 3® personalized activity plans
  • Transition and maintenance plans designed to support long-term weight control

What is Nutrisystem D?

Nutrisystem D features delicious, portion-controlled foods specifically designed for people with type 2 diabetes as part of a low-glycemic index meal plan with the right balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat (approximately 55%, 25%, and 20% of calories, respectively) so your patients can lose weight and control their blood glucose in a nutritionally-balanced manner.

The program's educational and support materials are tailored to individuals with diabetes. Nutrisystem D customers also have free access to Certified Diabetes Educators, who are registered dietitians or registered nurses with expertise in diabetes management. These experts in diabetes nutrition and weight management are available to help your patients throughout the entirety of their weight loss and maintenance programs.

Although the Nutrisystem D program was created with patients with type 2 diabetes in mind it, is also appropriate for overweight and obese patients with type 1 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance. Because persons who follow a Nutrisystem® program consume a low-calorie diet, those on certain medications (especially insulin, sulfonylureas, and non-sulfonylurea secretagogues) may require dosage adjustments to reduce the risk of hypoglycemic events. Thus, we encourage all customers who purchase the Nutrisystem D program to discuss their enrollment with their physicians to determine whether any action is necessary.

Who would benefit most from Nutrisystem D?

Since 2004, nearly half a million people with diabetes or pre-diabetes have taken the step toward improving their lives with the help of Nutrisystem D. Here are some suggested patient-types who could benefit from your professional recommendation of Nutrisystem D:

  • Newly diagnosed patients. A new diagnosis of diabetes can be overwhelming, with one of the first questions often being, "What can I eat?" Nutrisystem D will introduce your patient to a new world of healthy eating habits to help them manage their diabetes, deliver results and motivate them to take care of their health.
  • Patients with pre-diabetes. Nutrisystem D can help get your patients with impaired glucose tolerance on track to lose 5-10% of their body weight within 3-6 months. Several large, long-term trials (e.g. The Diabetes Prevention Program, The New England Journal of Medicine, 2002) have shown that even modest weight losses of this size can help patients with pre-diabetes significantly reduce the chances of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Patients unavailable for follow ups. By recommending Nutrisystem D, you are providing one-visit patients with a comprehensive support plan to help them make healthy changes. Additionally, our Certified Diabetes Educators will give them the guidance they need to continue making healthy decisions.
  • Patients who "don't eat much but still aren't losing weight." Patients trying to lose weight can underestimate their calorie intake by as much as 50%. When inaccurate recording or reporting of intake undermines weight loss efforts, increased dietary structure may be necessary. Nutrisystem provides structured meal plans and portion-controlled foods, which have been found to enhance dietary adherence and weight loss.
